Getting Started: Simple Ways to Kickstart Your Health and Wellness Journey

Did you know that 80% of people abandon their wellness plans within the first month? It's normal to feel frustrated or defeated when things don't go as expected. But the secret to long-term success is not trying to be perfect—it's about taking small, manageable steps that become habits. That's what I’m going to help you with today—easy simple steps to put you on your path to wellness keep you there

A group of girls in a walking group/club, this is a great way to meet new people while working on wellness goals, it can also be motivating to have people support you!

Goal Setting

One of the greatest barriers to wellness is creating realistic and attainable goals. The first secret to your wellness goals is: begin small and reward yourself along the journey. Instead of attempting to create a huge, all-or-nothing goal like "I'm going to exercise an hour daily," try to create something specific and attainable like "I'm going to walk 20 minutes three times this week."

Why does it work? Because when you define specific and measurable goals, you are giving yourself a clear direction to follow rather than leaving the door open to guesswork and frustration. It's much easier to commit to a 20-minute walk than to put yourself under the stress of an hour-a-day exercise routine. Baby steps combine over time to forge dramatic change.

The Power of Writing Down Your Goals

Research says you are 42% more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down. Something about putting something down on paper (or fingers across a keyboard) gets you engaged and holds you accountable. Breaking down your goals makes you as though they are more achievable and within reach.

Make It a Habit

A further secret of success is consistency. After you've set your small, specific goals, think about how you can make them a habit. Instead of promising yourself you'll "exercise more," for example, promise yourself you'll "walk after lunch on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday." When something's a habit, you don't even need to think about it—you just do it.

Habits are not developed overnight, and that is okay if you start small. Perform two things initially so that you do not feel overwhelmed. The more of these little things that you implement in your life, the quicker you will find them to be a habit of your healthy lifestyle.

Celebrate Every Victory—No Matter How Small

And one more thing you should know: acknowledge every success—large or small. Whether you've made it through your initial 20-minute walk or stayed on track for a week, reward yourself for your success. These small successes build confidence and reinforce good habits. Keep in mind, the journey to well-being is not perfection, but progress.

In short:

Establish short, specific goals (e.g., 20-minute walk, 3 times this week)

Write down your goals—you will be 42% more likely to actually do them

Establish consistency by making your goals your habits

Celebrate each victory, no matter how small

By creating small, manageable steps and making them a part of your life, you'll build sustainable change and stay motivated. Success is not setting yourself up for failure by attempting to implement unrealistic goals, but wellness as a way of life—one step at a time.
